The US Federal Maritime Commission has given transpacific carrier groups permission to work together on strategies to reduce carbon emissions, and, therefore, co-ordinate slow-steaming initiatives.
The Transpacific Stabilisation Agreement (TSA) group of carriers welcomed the move. TSA carriers were previously only allowed to meet and exchange market information to adopt common industry standards and practices, represent the industry before government bodies and establish non-binding guidelines that help stabilise rate levels and shipping practices.
"To achieve true, lasting environmental benefits from slow-steaming, carriers need to share information that will help them reduce emissions without disrupting carrier service levels," said TSA chairman YM Kim, who is also CEO of Hanjin Shipping.
