Spot rates on the Asia-Europe container trade are expected to touch US$2,000 per teu in two months time, according to Danske Bank's container rate index.
The index shows that rates are currently at $1,763, which is 4% higher than last week's index figure, while the average rate level over the last four weeks is $1,682.
Those participating in this week's index said they expected rates to hit $1,937 in two months time, which is 15% higher than the expectations of those who took part in last week's index.
Danske Bank said: "Carriers have the upper hand - no doubt about that. Many participants in our container index expect rates to move to $2,000 per teu two months ahead, as carriers plan to take out more capacity following the Chinese new year. "
"One participant complained that carriers currently have18 different surcharges - including peak-season surcharges, even though we're way past the peak season."
Danske Bank defines spot rate as the charge for a 20ft dry van container, including all surcharges, except terminal handling charges, from Shanghai, Ningbo or Shenzhen to Antwerp, Zeebrugge, Rotterdam, Bremerhaven or Hamburg.
